Resources Resources have an influence on Culture and Economies Japan Seafood / fishing Florida Tourism / beaches / relaxed mood / year round agriculture Colorado Skiing / mountains / clothing

Economic System An economic system sets the rules for what goods and services to produce and how to produce them

Types of Economies Traditional Market Command Mixed

Traditional Economy Based on agriculture Limited barter and trade Sustenance or need based Early tribal and river civilizations

Market Economy Individuals and companies decide what to produce Companies own resources Prices and wages decided by producer supply and consumer demand United States Also known as Capitalism or Free Market

Command Economy Government decides what to produce Government owns resources Prices and wages controlled by the government North Korea, China, Cuba, Vietnam, and former Soviet Union Sometimes called Communism Often in Communist countries it is illegal to be late for work.

Communism in the Soviet Union The former Soviet Union was a super power in mineral wealth, military power, and space exploration. Yet this strong and proud nation had difficulty producing simple, commonplace things—good shoes, for example, or good shirts, cars, bread, or French fries. Why did a super power capable of producing ICBMs not produce high quality consumer products? 1. The Soviet Union had a vast store of natural resources including timber, gold, and minerals of all sorts. 2. The Soviets strictly limited trade with the West. 3. The Soviets held several records in space exploration, including the first successful launch of an earth satellite. 4. Soviet enterprises did produce consumer products, but the products were often shoddy and in short supply. 5. The Soviets had vast reserves of oil. 6. In 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. 7. The largest car manufacturing plant in the history of the auto industry was built in the Soviet Union. 8. The command form of economy established under Joseph Stalin offered few rewards to people who produced consumer goods.

Mixed Economy Individuals and companies decide what to produce Government may control wages Government may also regulate or control certain industries

Factors Determining Economic Activity Topography: Physical features of the land Climate: Average temperature and precipitation of a region Natural Resources: Provided by nature and used in economic activities

Wants vs. Needs Needs: Goods or services that a person requires to maintain life, such as water, food, clothing, and shelter. Also known as subsistent needs. Wants: Goods or services that a person wants, but are not necessary for survival, such as Playstation 2, lipstick, and cell phones.
