Bell-work 12/5/13 Looking at the map on page 207 answer: What were the boundaries of the US at this time? Why do you believe states wanted to claim western territories? Based on this map, how might western land claims threaten national unity? EQ: How did the government settle the western lands? TSWBAT identify the Land Ordinances

Objective: The student will be able to compare and contrast the Land Ordinances and their role in settling the West as with 80% accuracy Where does today’s objective fit into our unit learning goal? C What is the difference in complexity between levels 2 and 3 for this objective?

Foldable: Fold paper length wise: Make three cuts ONLY on the front flap to create four windows

1. Settling the Western Lands The AOC had to be approved by all 13 states Some states would not give their approval until other states dropped their claims to land West of the Appalachian Mountains After years of arguing all the states gave up their claims to the land so the AOC could be passed. The western land that the states had given up was turned over to the national government The land was very valuable, it was to be sold to private companies

2. Land Ordinance of 1785 Congress needed to create a system for land sales and settlement in the Northwest territories Under this ordinance surveyors were to divide public lands in townships, 6 miles on each side This would result in a grid of squares These 36 sections (one square mile) would be sold for no less than $1 per acre

You can still see the results of the Land Ordinances today in the NW territories

3. Land Ordinance of 1787 Set up a three step process for admitting new states 1. New territories were appointed a governor, three judges and a secretary 2. Once your free male population=5,000; then the territory could elect a legislature When your total population reaches 60,000 a territory can draft a constitution and can apply for statehood. Using this process, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin became new states out of the Northwest Territory *This was usually known as the Northwest Ordinance. Therefore, no slavery allowed in these territories.

4. Land Ordinance of 1790 This dealt with land south of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi. Surveying the land was the same as the ordinances of 1785 and 1787 Only difference…these territories allow slavery ***As a 7 year old country the Ohio River already divides the North and South

Summary and Progress Chart Summarize: How did the government settle western lands? In doing so what did we do very early on in our history? Complete progress chart for objective C
