MARCIVE/GPO Cataloging Record Distribution Program Jim Noël

Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) Cataloging Record Distribution Pilot Project kicked off February The US Government Printing Office (GPO) contracted with MARCIVE, Inc., to produce cataloging for a representative sample of depository libraries.

Initial Pilot Project We had 48 participating libraries, representing a range of depository types. Some were existing MARCIVE customers, but many were not. Record production began in February with records covering October 2009-January 2010, then settled into a monthly schedule. During summer 2010, GPO analyzed results of initial project and declared it a success. Cataloging Record Distribution Program (CRDP) expanded to 75 libraries.

Year One of CRDP Total of 75 libraries participating October Service is free to all participants. 40 are returning libraries; 35 are new. Pilot libraries choosing not to return cited staffing changes, major changes to item profiles. Returning libraries able to make changes to specs. New libraries process a test file before beginning monthly output.

Profiling and Distribution Most libraries requested that files be divided, mainly by format but also changed vs. new. About half of participants chose to receive records created from GPO’s shelflist project. Libraries can make changes to specifications twice a year. Item profiles are updated monthly using GPO’s Item Lister.

Historic Shelflist Project GPO project to create bibs from internal shelflist. Records created from the cards: OCLC and LC database not consulted. Records lack OCLC#. Dates of publication mid-1800s to the mid-1990s. Since item numbers were often not in use and are largely obsolete, we cannot select using an item profile. Records available as an all-or-nothing option, although we can limit by SuDoc class stem. So far mostly Congressional publications, but others will follow.

What About Next Year? CRDP will continue through September 2011 with the 75 existing libraries. If GPO decides to continue the program, monthly production will resume. More libraries will be invited to participate, depending on budget.
