Scottsboro Boys

Who were the Scottsboro Boys? A group of nine African-American boys who allegedly gang raped two white girls.

Unfair Trials Trials began 12 days after their arrest “one big smiling white face” Denied the right of council Convicted based on small amounts of evidence

Lawyers The boys were not given adequate defense lawyers. The ILD (Institute of Learning and Development) provided them with lawyers so people stopped thinking they only supported them for their company –Not criminal attorneys

ILD Initiated a legal and political campaign for the freedom of the boys Battle with NAACP for control of the case –Began affecting the world outside the justice system –NAACP accused the Communist Party of using the boys for propoganda Communist party used publicity to put a lot of pressure on the Atlantic justice system

NAACP National Association for the Advancement of Colored People If the boys were found guilty, it would damage their effectiveness Communist Party made the Scottsboro case their own –Recruiting tool

How it Affected the Book Just how the Scottsboro trials affected everyone as it spread throughout the news, it affected the Finch family –They speak of the trials throughout the book
