 The Gothic movement originated in the buildings and gardens of the English, before progressing to literature. (Connell)  The first Gothic Romanticism novel was The Castle of Otranto in 1765 by Horace Walpole. (Brians)

 The elements of Gothic Romanticism were bleak and dismal (Butcher)  The mood and themes were dominated by setting (Brians)  Settings generally consisted of ancient castles, dungeons, and graveyards etc. (Connell)  Has elements of mystery, passion and irrationalism (Brians)  The first type of literature to truly illicit great emotion (Butcher)
