Forward Pion Detector Len EunRHIC/AGS Users Meeting, June 07 STAR Two 5x5 arrays of Pb glass cells for up/down / Two 7x7 arrays for North/South Commissioned on both sides of STAR from Run3 to Run5, and east only in Run6. 2

FPD FPD ++ for Run 6 Len EunRHIC/AGS Users Meeting, June 07 STAR Expansion of the west FPD 6X6 small cells from the FPD at the center large cells surrounding them. Served as a prototype of the Forward Meson Spectrometer ++ 3

Acceptance - Run6 Len EunRHIC/AGS Users Meeting, June 07 STAR Limited acceptance for individual detectors  Strong x F and p T correlation FPD at =3.7 and 4.0, and FPD ++ at =3.3. When combined, cover a broad range of x F and p T For given rapidity, event rate falls sharply with both x F and p T. 4

A N and  0 cross section from Run 2 Len EunRHIC/AGS Users Meeting, June 07 STAR PRL 92, (2004) √s=200 GeV, = 3.8 PRL 97, (2006) Inclusive   cross section for p+p collisions vs. the leading   energy. Analyzing power vs. x F for polarized p+p collisions 1.At RHIC energy,   cross section is consistent with the NLO pQCD calculation 2.Transverse spin asymmetry observed in lower energy persists at RHIC energy 5 Used in the global analysis of fragmentation function hep-ph/

Transverse Spin Runs at STAR with Forward Calorimetry Len EunRHIC/AGS Users Meeting, June 07 STAR ~60~45~30~15 East FPD West FPD++ full FPD (8 matrices) 6 matrices of FPD EEMC and FPD prototypes detector /3.3±3.7/±4.0±3.3/± Run6Run5Run3Run2 sampled Figure of Merit (P BEAM 2 x L) in Run 6 is ~50 times larger (P BEAM 2 x L) in Run 6 is ~50 times larger than previous STAR runs combined 6

x F dependence of A N Len EunRHIC/AGS Users Meeting, June 07 STAR A N increases with X F at positive x F A N is consistent with 0 at negative x F Run 6 added data points at η = 3.3  The first map of x F and p T dependence Preliminary Small errors allow quantitative comparison to the theory η dependence is reversed in theory! 7 hep-ex/

p T dependence of A N – Theory Len EunRHIC/AGS Users Meeting, June 07 STAR Both Sivers and Collins/Heppelmann models of SSA involves S T dependent k T offset introduced by Initial State Parton Distribution Function  Sivers Final State Fragmentation Funcion  Collins/Heppelmann Higher Twist effect is also suppressed by p T as it is required by the definition of higher twist. A N vs. l T from Kouvaris, Qiu, Vogelsang, and Yuan fitted to E704 data Phys.Rev.D74:114013,2006. Falls as 1/P T 8

p T dependence of A N Len EunRHIC/AGS Users Meeting, June 07 STAR Run3 + Run 5 data didn’t show an obvious departure from the predicted 1/p T dependence. Preliminary With Run6 data added, we see a much more complicated behavior. Analyzing power clearly does not fall between ~1.7 GeV and ~3.2 GeV of p T. Residual x F dependence? 9 hep-ex/

p T dependence of A N in x F bins Len EunRHIC/AGS Users Meeting, June 07 STAR D’Alesio & Murgia PRD 70 (2004) Combined data from three runs at =3.3, 3.7 and 4.0 Within each plot, x F does not change significantly.  negligible residual x F dependence. There is no statistically significant evidence that A N falls as a function of p T. 10 hep-ex/
