ADVANCED DESIGN APPLICATIONS MANUFACTURING © 2015 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association Preliminary Learning Cycle – Family Ties

The BIG Idea  Big Idea: The design and manufacture of products is affected by customer, societal, economic, and environmental concerns. Fabricated products are comprised of multiple components and materials. © 2015 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association

Objectives  Students will analyze and differentiate between materials and processes utilized to manufacture a variety of products. © 2015 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association

What is Technology? Technology encompasses every device or system that has been designed and created by humans. After taking a closer look at all of the human- made products and systems around you, it is hard to image what life would be like without technology. All of the many human-made devices that surround our lives were developed through some type of human-initiated manufacturing process. © 2015 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association

Manufacturing Remnants and artifacts from thousands of years ago indicate that people have been making things (manufacturing) for centuries. Oldest forms were for survival and dominance. Tools for hunting and gathering Construction of shelter Clothing Military technologies © 2015 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association

Manufacturing Process Refinements create new manufacturing technology Processes and materials change and lead to improving processes. Similar to the engineering design process Feedback used to reassess design leads to refinements in the process. © 2015 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association tos-images/production.html

How Things Work Many people who enjoy technology like to take things apart so they can understand how machines and devices operate. Designers and Engineers use ideas in designs for other applications and systems. Disassemble products to see how they work © 2015 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association

Process of Assembly Requires careful planning and coordination between humans and machines. Often done by machines How was each part made? Screws, plastic casings, springs What are the materials? Which processes were most likely used to create the final sub-components? © 2015 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association
