Administrators Kick Off 2014 The Science of Implementation Practice: 21 st Century Literacy across content areas Name: Brian Saxton School: Aptos Junior High

Stage & Scope of implementation In between initial and full implementation ELA, Science, most electives support 21 st century literacy Social Studies at the 8 th grade level is moving to full implementation

+ 21 st Century Literacy Demonstrate Independence Strong Content Knowledge Respond to Varying Demands of Audience Comprehend as well as Critique Value Evidence Use Technology & Digital Media Understand Other Perspectives & Cultures

+

History & Context Why was this THE idea to push to full implementation? CCSS is for all subjects Needed to bring in subjects other than Math and ELA to support big ideas in the CCSS Literacy is something that every subject can support 21 st century literacy is even easier to support and comes directly from the CCSS

3 key obstacles and how they were overcome There are no CCSS for us Oh yes there are! It’s ELA’s job to teach literacy and non-fiction reading Oh no it’s not! We don’t have time Oh yes you do!

Which DRIVERS do you have in place? Accelerated Reader Early out Wednesdays Strong relationships with staff My own knowledge of the CCSS Continuous emphasis that this is a whole school effort

Non-negotiables Non-fiction and literacy has to be supported in the majority of classes outside of ELA

Impact on students and staff Non-fiction reading percentage went up Students were doing more presentations and critiquing those presentations than before ELA teachers felt supported Students were being exposed to various types of non fiction

How will you sustain or grow the practice? Continue with current practices: – AR non fiction in Science and Social Studies – Continue to review 21 st century literacy skills Train subjects outside of ELA on close reading skills Work with EL and intervention teachers to find strategies for students that are in their classes
