Know What You Want! This is what you got?

Know What You Want! What competencies are needed to do the job? What skills must they already have and what can be taught? What experience and education is required? What behaviors will be a “good” fit? Get input from those who will work with the position the most!

Why do employees stay? What makes you an employer of choice? Conduct “STAY Interviews” Why do they stay? What has helped them be successful? What do they tell friends and family about the job? How would they describe the work environment?

Now develop interview questions What questions can help identify: Competencies Skills Behaviors on the job Elaborate on experience and/or education What is important to them? Do those things match why people have stayed or want to come to work for you?

Let’s see how this works: Reliability/Attendance Ability to get along with others Process Improvement Attention to Detail Time Management Computer Proficiency

What do you ask? Reliability Conflict Process Improvement

Behavioral Interview Questions Open ended Looking for specific things in the answers Looking for a complete STAR for each answer Situation/Task Action they took Result of that action

Sample Behavioral Interview Questions Reliability: How many unscheduled days were you out of work last year? Tell me about a time that you had to “call out” of work? What happened to your workload? Give me a specific example of when you went above and beyond what was expected of you to get something done at work? Tell me about a time you missed a deadline? What happened?

Sample Behavioral Question Conflict Tell me about a time that you had a conflict with someone at work. (STAR) Give me an example of a time that you successfully resolved a conflict you had with a co-worker.
