A HYPOTHESIS is a proposal to explain certain facts or observations A PREDICTION is a suggestion stating what will happen in the future based on an observation, theory or hypothesis A bathroom light doesn’t work. Which of these are predictions and which are hypotheses? The lightbulb in the bathroom might not work because there could be a short in the circuit The lightbulb in the bathroom might not work because the power to the house is off The lightbulb doesn’t work because the bulb is burnt out If the light bulb is replaced it will work If every electrical appliance in the house doesn’t work there is no power to the house and the lightbulb won’t work The lightbulb will work after the fuse is changed Wednesday, 18 November 2015

A HYPOTHESIS is a proposal to explain certain facts or observations A PREDICTION is a suggestion stating what will happen in the future based on an observation, theory or hypothesis Garden plants wont grow Which of these are predictions and which are hypotheses? The plant might not grow because the soil is lacking in nutrients The plant might not grow if it doesn’t have enough water The plant won’t grow if it has pests If a fertiliser is added the plant will grow If I spray a pesticide on the plant it will grow If I water the plant it will grow

Teachers Hypothesis – If you have a larger mass of a reactant, then a larger mass of products must be made as more atoms will be bonding What is your prediction? Each pair in the class will be given a different mass of copper. The copper reacts with oxygen when heated over a bunsen. You will then need to weigh the copper oxide to find out how much has been formed and compare the mass change to others in the class Can you draw a sketch graph to show what you think the pattern will be? Mass of copperMass of copper oxide

Variables The independent variable is the one that you change or select. The dependent variable is the one changes as a result, and that you measure. The control variables must not change, so that it is a fair test. What shape will the graph be if a group 1 metal was used? Why couldn’t we use group 1 metals?
