Mesopotamia Poem! Mesopotamia There once was a CIVILIZATION That grew ENOUGH FOOD to feed their great nation The SOCIAL STRUCTURE had snobs And a variety of jobs They used WRITING for communication RELIGION played a big part With beliefs and worship to start The CULTURE was grand Literature, architecture, and band Not to mention the very good art The people developed TECHNOLOGY (Tools and inventions like radiology) Their GOVERNMENT made rules Like “all kids must attend schools” All of this is anthropology!

civilization Complex societies that have cities, organized governments, art, religion, class divisions, and a writing system.

irrigation The construction of dams, ditches, walls, and water ways to bring water to the fields for farming.

cuneiform Writing used to keep track of business deals and events. It consisted of hundreds of wedge shaped marks cut into clay tablets with a sharp ended reed, some were made of ivory.

scribe Only a few people, mainly boys, learned how to write. They held honored positions and often became judges and political leaders.

City-state A city and its surrounding villages that has its own governmental unit. Los Angeles could be a city-state Santa Monica, Woodland Hills, Pasadena, etc.

artisans Skilled workers who made metal products, cloth or pottery.

empire Group of many different lands under one ruler.

provinces Kings divided the empire into provinces (political districts). This is similar to how the united states is divided.
