China & the World

China  Do you think it was easy of hard for the people of China to make contact with people of other civilizations? Why or why not?

Ancient China  Using the map below (and the one in your book on page 122), pick a place where you think Chinese civilization may have started. Explain your answer.

Dragon  What do you think of when you think of a dragon?  What do you think they represent in China?

Geography  The Chinese believe that dragons are friendly beasts that bring good luck.  Dragons were believed to be spirits that controlled the rain and rivers.  Sometimes, the ancient Chinese called their rivers dragons.  Limbs: smaller tributaries  Body: main river  Mouth: delta

Ancient China  The Huang He (Yellow River) and the Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) are the main rivers in China.  Civilization first began along the Yellow River and spread to other parts of China.  The ancient Chinese did not know about the Egyptians, Romans or Greeks.  They called themselves the “Middle Kingdom” because they believed they lived at the Center of the World.
