Presentation transcript:

The Earth is made up of different spheres and layers... Why are there layers? What are their names? What are the names of the different spheres? List anything else that you might know about the Earth’s spheres and layers.

1. How do the hydro-, geo-, and atmospheres affect the biosphere? 2. How do members of the biosphere affect the geosphere? 3. How do members of the biosphere affect the hydro- and atmosphere? 4. Which of the 4 major spheres do you believe has the most influence on the others?

Why does the Earth have layers?

1. Crust – thin rocky outer layer of the Earth Continental crust Oceanic crust 2. Mantle – thick middle layer of hot but solid rock Lithosphere – includes upper mantle and crust Asthenosphere – soft weak rock below Lithosphere that can flow like taffy Mesosphere – stiff rock below asthenosphere, right above the… 3. Core – large sphere of metal that occupies the Earth’s center Outer – liquid due to high temperature Inner – solid due to high pressure

Which part of Earth’s interior takes up the greatest volume? Which region takes up the smallest volume? Where is continental crust the thickest?

What happens to temperature as you move from the crust towards the core? What happens to pressure as you move from the crust towards the core? Why does the Earth have layers that have formed?

Draw a picture of the Earth that includes its 4 major spheres and 3 main layers. Include a description of the 4 major spheres Include the 3 layers of the mantle, as well as, the inner and outer core Label: The width of the major layers A description of each layer Make note of what happens to Temperature and Pressure as you move from the outer layers inward. Use colored pencils or crayons to color the layers different colors MAKE SURE picture is drawn to scale!!! You will be using this to help you study, so make sure you write neatly.

In the movie Journey to the Center of the Earth, the people find a tropical paradise with sea monsters and dinosaurs at the center of the earth. What is the center layer of the earth known as? Explain why a tropical paradise like this cannot be found as was shown in the movie.

Name all the layers of the earth. Start with the outermost and work your way in. Which part of the core (outer or inner) is liquid and which is solid? Why is one liquid and one solid?

Draw a picture of the Earth that includes the 3 main layers. Include the 3 layers of the mantle, as well as, the inner and outer core Label: The width of the major layers A description of each layer (what type of rock they are made up of, liquid, solid, hot, flow, etc.) Make note of what happens to Temperature and Pressure as you move from the outer layers inward. Use colored pencils or crayons to color the layers different colors You will be using this to help you study, so make sure you write neatly.
