Webquest Learning: Acids and Bases

Purpose and Getting Started This webquest is to build your knowledge and understanding so you can answer most or all of the questions on the pre-assessment. Please read each page carefully. And answer all questions that are typed in red on the answer sheet provided. Follow the links to find information about each topic or search out your own links to find the information- but remember to use your time wisely.

About Sources Some questions provide links as a useful starting point. If no links are provided do your own search on Google or other search engine. You may go to Wikipedia but realize it is NOT always the best source of information. When in doubt, you should use two or more sources that agree. A site with.edu,.org, is typically more reliable. Google is NOT a source. A source is a website that delivers the specific information. Google is like the library-- you don’t say your source was the ‘library.’

Why Do We Care? Acids and Bases have been known and used for thousands of years They are an important class of chemical compounds and react in predictable ways List 3 uses for acids and bases over the years 1._________________________ 2.__________________________ 3.__________________________

The “Basics” Physical Properties of acids include Taste:_________________ Feel :__________________ _______________________ Physical Properties of bases include Taste:_________________ Feel: __________________ _______________________

Arrhenius Model/Bronsted-Lowry Model ArrheniusBronsted-Lowry Acid Arrhenius says acids do thisBronsted-Lowry says acids do this Base Arrhenius says bases do thisBronsted-Lowry says bases do this

Strong or Weak? How does a strong acid differ from a weak acid in how it gives up, or ‘dissociates’ the H+ (or donates the proton) ______________________________ How does a strong base differ from a weak base in how it gives up, or ‘dissociates’ the OH- (or accepts the proton) ______________________________

Draw It/Write It Go to the inspiration application on your computer and make a brief web map to illustrate the differences between strong and weak acids/bases OR You may write a brief poem or a song to describe the differences between strong and weak acids/bases If time allows groups will present their creative works

Hydronium Ion Write the molecular formula for the hydronium ion (with charge shown) See the animation on how the hydronium ion is formed when water splits into hydronium ion and OH- hydroxide ion (the red ball is a H+ ion) at

pH scale See the pH and pOH scale at the BOTTOM of : Enter thhe pH/pOH scale range below- From:_ ___________________To:__ _____________ The pH range for acids is from ________________to ________________ The pH range for bases is from __________ to _____________ The pH of pure distilled water is The pH of stomach acid is about ________________ Can you explain the relationship between exponent in the hydronium concentration [H3O+] (the 5 in 1 x ) and pH? _________________

Acid Base Reactions Go to the BOTTOM of the page at: or look at: When an acid and base react they form two new compounds, a 1)_ __and 2)_ _______ So the following reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide in acqueous solution would produce the following two products HCl + NaOH ---> ________ + _________

Learn Some Definitions Amphoteric means ____________ Titration means _____________ Monoprotic and Polyprotic mean ____________ Buffer for acids and bases means _____________ (try looking on your own for these)

Avoid Misconceptions Finally, take a look at the common misconceptions people have about acids and bases Does this correct any misconceptions you might have had? Explain.
