Presentation transcript:

The Points of the Compass (1) The points of the compass divide up a circle. Remember: A circle has 360o or 6400 mils. The points read clock-wise from North (0o ) Cardinal Points: North: 0o East: 90o (1/4 circle) South:180o (1/2 circle) West: 270o (3/4 circle) Level Three 419.05 OHP # 1

The Points of the Compass (2) The cardinal points are further divided into 12 Intermediate Points. The letters representing North, South, East and West are combined. Ex: SE for South East: between South and East SSE for South South East: between South and SE Remember: List the cardinal point first then the intermediate point. Level Three 419.05 OHP # 2

What is Magnetic Declination? True North: The North Pole Magnetic North: Large magnetic field in the Canadain North True and Magnetic North are not in the same place. The difference between them is an error that can be corrected. This correction is called Magnetic Declination. True North The angle created by the lines is an error, or the Magnetic Declination for St. John’s. Magnetic North St. John’s Level Three 419.05 OHP # 3
