What does it mean to be Green?

How Green Is Nova Scotia?

Nova Scotia is a world leader in recycling and composting.

Typical landfill site in Nova Scotia.

How Green Is Nova Scotia? By 2013, Nova Scotia will have over 300 wind turbines producing 18.5% of our power.

Tidal power is growing in Nova Scotia due to the force of tides in the Bay of Fundy. 1-Megawatt Tidal Turbine (a typical North American home uses about 8900 kilowatt hours per year.)

Is Nova Scotia Doing a Decent Job? Are we doing enough? Are we building toward a SUSTAINABLE future?

Sustainability Sustainably designed things are BOTH Environmentally Responsible Environmentally Responsible& Socially Responsible

There’s MORE to it than just

There’s MORE to it than just reuse, reduce, recycle… We need to be thinking of the product’s entire life. Products effect people too!

We have to rethink the way we make things….  Have a discussion about the stuff in your life and how it uses energy from the beginning of its life to the end (cradle to grave) Every decision we make about energy has to do with managing our ‘stuff’

Energy is just one piece. We have to rethink the way we make things. If We Don’t…  Consider the social ( ) & environmental ( ) impact of what you see.  Video Trailer Video Trailer Video Trailer

Systems Thinking Systems thinking means thinking about a piece of technology, a product, etc… as part of an entire system – not just a thing. This system involves ALL the people and places influenced by this system during its LIFE CYCLE.

Why Should We Care?  Watch the following videos. Take notes.  In the end, you will write a ½-1 page answer to that question. Social Responsibility  rises-to-175/ rises-to-175/ rises-to-175/   Environmental Responsibility  

Assignment Write ½ to 1 page reflection on why we should care if technologies & products we use are sustainable (socially & environmentally responsible).
