Energy Transformations  Energy comes in many forms that are interchangeable and is always conserved in a closed system.
ENERGY BASICS.
All forms of energy fall under 2 categories:  Potential  Kinetic.
In science, ENERGY is the ability to do work and cause change.
ENERGY Forms Transformations Thermal. FORMS OF ENERGY Essential Question: How can you tell the difference between potential and kinetic energy?
Energy Kinetic Energy Potential Energy.
Kinetic and Potential Energy have many forms. 1. Mechanical Energy - Energy associated with motion or position.

Energy is defined simply by scientists as the capacity for doing work. Energy.
ENERGY Ability to do work or cause change. Potential Stored energy. Has the ability to move. It might move, it might not move.

Energy: Machines, Motion and Light Energy exists in many different states. Energy can be transformed from one state to another in order to power machines.
Move It, Move It!!!! Forms of Energy. Mechanical Energy Energy of movement(can be in a potential or kinetic state)
Chemical Energy Energy that is released during a chemical reaction or change Type of Potential Energy Examples: – Batteries – Burning Wood – Coal – Oil.

Absent Work 10/16/14 Copy the following slides into your composition book.
Forms of energy Everything is either Matter OR energy.
Energy In all it’s forms. What is energy? The ability to do work or move objects Energy is all around you! – You can hear energy as sound. – You can see.
Work and Energy. What is WORK? Work is equal to the amount of force it takes for an object to move a distance. Formula: Work = Force X Distance W = F.
Forms of Energy. Law of Conservation of Energy never Energy is never created or destroyed, it only changes form!

Energy Types and Forms

 Write the Pendulum of Potential and Kinetic Energy in your notebook

During energy transfers, forms of energy may also be transformed into other forms of energy.

An example: a battery has chemical energy stored inside and can change into electrical energy, that can change into light and heat.

Radiant (Light) Energy  energy transmitted in the form of electromagnetic waves (as heat waves, light waves, radio waves, X-rays)

Electrical energy  is when electricity creates motion, light or heat. An example of electrical energy is the electric coils on your stove

Mechanical Energy  is the energy of motion that does the work. An example of mechanical energy is the wind as it turns a windmill.

Sound Energy  is energy produced by sound vibrations

Thermal Energy  is energy that is pushed into motion by using heat. An example is a fire in your fireplace

Nuclear Energy  the energy released by a nuclear reaction. Fission and fusion

Chemical Energy  is energy caused by chemical reactions.

Gravitational Energy  is motion that is caused by gravity. An example of gravitational energy is water flowing down a waterfall.
