Welcome To The Alice Perlaw Library Media Center

Ms. Klurfield & Ms. Thomas Open 7:15 – 3:30 Monday – Friday Follow Us On

Encourage your child to apply… We are looking for members to join the newly formed Student Library Advisory Committee (SLAC) Application deadline, Monday, September 22 Click here Click here or look for the link on the Library’s home page.

Databases vs. Googling Research Smackdown Databases are collections of previously published, often peer- reviewed (vetted) sources of information Like text books and reference books, the purpose of these sources is to support student learning through their layout and use of indexing Librarians carefully review and select databases to purchase Students will be required to use these types of scholarly sources in college Can be a good starting point for overview of topic but not necessarily sources. ANYONE can create a web site and post ANY information, factual or not. Many sites lack information necessary for Works Cited, a requirement for research projects and papers. Google isn’t necessarily structured to support student learning.

DATABASES ARE THE CLEAR WINNER! MHS Library Database Link

MHS Databases Usernames and Passwords for all are: username - dodger password - dodger EXCEPT World Book:username - Madison password - mpschools Proquest:username - dodger1234 password - dodger

Database Tips & Tools Best Bets: EBSCOEBSCO/EbscoHost Web/Academic Search Premier and/or MasterFile Premier (journals, magazines, and some newspapers) Opposing Viewpoints Opposing Viewpoints (breaks down issues in easy to use format) ProQuestProQuest (newspapers, specifically New York Times) Gale Virtual Reference E-Books Tips: Use quotes to search on a specific term: “teapot dome” Use AND between words “Tea Party” AND Boston Click on full-text Look for indexed and suggested Subject Headings Use synonyms/different phrasing: adolescent, young adult, teenage May need to click on PDF link Use print icons in database not the print command for browser

Thank you! Please be in touch if there is any way we can be of help to your child!
