Lesson 1 Operating Systems, Part 1

Objectives Describe and list different operating systems Understand file extensions Manage files and folders

What is an operating system? An operating system is software that manages how hardware and software work together and talk to each other.

What does an operating system do? Controls basic functions: Scheduling tasks Running applications Controlling input and output devices Interfaces between user and computer

Some common operating systems:

File Extensions The file extension tells the operating system what type of program it needs to open, view, print, or edit a particular file. A suffix consisting of a period and the last three or four characters after the name of the file.

Staying Organized Organizing files can help you find them quickly and efficiently.
