GP vocational training 2 - What does being a training practice mean?

Why be a training practice? Prestige - indicates high standards of record keeping, organisation, patient care Stimulation - contact with young doctors keeps everyone in touch with new developments Balance - educational activity as well as clinical activity Peer support - for trainer, from trainers’ group Recruitment - ex GPRs or candidates attracted by practice’s training status

Yorkshire criteria for training practices - the practice Premises adequate, preferably consulting room for GPR Effective PHCT Effective practice management Records summarised Library and IT Video camera and player

Yorkshire criteria for training practices - GPR work Appropriate workload (not too heavy but providing sufficient experience) Consultations at 10 min intervals (or longer) Out of hours experience Contract of employment

Yorkshire criteria for training practices - GPR education All team committed to training and involved in teaching Timetable with protected tutorial time After-surgery discussion time GPR always covered by trainer or delegated partner Training in audit, chronic disease management, prescribing, preventive care, health promotion

Financial rewards Training grant to trainer £6000 from Deanery for new training practices Occasional Deanery grants e g £2000 for library, £400 for camera Trainers asked to help with GPR recruitment and reapproval visits to trainers on other schemes: £350/day plus travel

Half Day Release Compulsory for GPRs to attend Organised in small groups with the help of intending trainers and established trainers Trainers with special expertise sometimes organise and facilitate sessions - paid at the standard rate Currently no payment for small group work (no budget - we used to pay them from drug company sponsorship but no longer find this source of finance acceptable) But trainers’ experience of small group facilitation and other educational methods is of value to the practice as these skills can be used for practice development
