{ Precision measurements of the beta neutrino correlation in the WI Electrostatic Ion Trap 3 December 2012 Sergey Vaintraub

2 Where to search for beyond SM Physics? Sergey Vaintraub Brute force (“Swifter, Higher, Stronger”): Go higher in energy/luminosity LHC/Tevatron/ILC Finesse: High precision experiments Detect the effect of beyond SM on low energy observables For example βν correlation measurements

3 6 Li daughter nucleus e - Electron e  Electron anti-neutrino  New physics beyond the Standard Model’s V-A structure  Pure Gamow-Teller 6 He beta decay Sergey Vaintraub βν correlation

4 Trap chamber 30 o magnet Neutron generator EIBT 1 m Setup scheme Sergey Vaintraub

Electrons detector MCP Entrance mirror Exit mirror Electrons collected at position sensitive plastic scintillator 6 Li ions collected at MCP detectors 6 Li ++ e-e- 5 6 He beta decay at EIBT Sergey Vaintraub

6 Electrons detector MCP Entrance mirror Exit mirror Some of 6 Li ions will miss MCP at its periphery 6 Li ++ e-e- -  e and are in the same direction, hence momentum of recoiling 6 Li is maximum AND in the opposite direction. Sergey Vaintraub

7 Electrons detector MCP Entrance mirror Exit mirror Some of 6 Li ions will go though MCP hole 6 Li ++ e-e- -  e and are in opposite directions, hence momentum of recoiling 6 Li is small. Sergey Vaintraub

8 Losses Mechanisms Sergey Vaintraub

9 Statistical precision  In order to go below 1% statistical precision one should accumulate about one million coincidences Sergey Vaintraub

Present Setup

DT-NGfurnace 30 0 magnet EBITBeam optics 7 m Trap chamber Setup Status A. Neutron Generator DT-NG D + T → n + 4 He E n = 14.2 MeV, Production rate~10 10 n/s Ordered from VNIIA (Russia).

DT-NGfurnace 30 0 magnet EBITBeam optics 7 m Trap chamber Setup Status B. Furnace + BeO target The 14 MeV neutrons hit a hot (1500K) BeO target, as a result, 6 He nuclei are produced. Ordered from HeatWave (USA). (ETA - Winter 2011).Porous BeO 80 mm x 2 mm discs delivered and stored 6 He

DT-NGfurnace 30 0 magnet EBITBeam optics 7 m Trap chamber Setup Status C. Accumulator and Buncher EBIT - DREBIT (Dresden, Germany) Neutral 6 He enter the EBIT, ionized, accumulated and bunched. Custom made for efficient 6 He injection

DT-NGfurnace 30 0 magnet EBITBeam optics 7 m Trap chamber Setup Status D. Trap Chamber Stable isotopes trapping Detectors: MCP’s Plastic Scintillator with multiple photomultipliers Electronics – ADC, TDC,…

15 Summary Sergey Vaintraub Present setup offers significant advantages over other schemes: Large solid angle for recoils and electrons. Field-free inner region. Full reconstruction of the e-ν angle. Ease-of-operation and portability. Complementary to other methods (different systematic errors) “Continuous” operation (no “beam time”…) Easily adapted for other radioactive species.
