How to Talk About this Measure October 2013

What is the Other Side Saying? “Freedom” “Choice” “Right to Work” “You shouldn’t be forced…”

“Right to Work” Messages Are Very Strong Now I’d like to read you some more statements from people who SUPPORT this ballot measure. After I read each one, please tell me how convincing you think that statement is. 3

What are We Saying?

Our Top Messages Now I’d like to read you some more statements from people who OPPOSE this ballot measure. After I read each one, please tell me how convincing you think that statement is. 5

Our Second Tier Messages 6 Oregonians to do that.

Our Least Effective Messages 7

The Bad News… The other side’s messages are better. Our slogans won’t win the election. We can’t fight on the other side’s turf.

So What Now?

How to Talk About This Measure 1. Set The Context: Protect the Middle Class 11 More and more corporations are grabbing record profits by cutting wages, benefits, and hours. While corporate profits are at an all time high, wages for workers have fallen.

2. Identify Who’s Behind This Measure 12 Now, big corporate interests are pushing Bill Sizemore’s ideas to the 2014 ballot to further threaten working people and middle- class families. They’re behind these measures because they are pushing their own agenda – to make it easier for them cut benefits, hold down wages and ship jobs overseas. How to Talk About This Measure

3. Who Would Be Hurt? 13 These measures would limit the ability of public service workers such as nurses and firefighters to negotiate for better staffing levels, modern equipment, and safer working conditions— threatening the safety of the very people we count on in emergencies. How to Talk About This Measure

3. Who Would Be Hurt? 14 Public safety workers, like firefighters and nurses, oppose this measure because they need their unions who negotiate for safety equipment and how many hours they can work without a break. How to Talk About This Measure

15 How to Talk About This Measure: Summary 1. Set The Context: Protect the Middle Class 2. Identify Who’s Behind This Measure 3. Who Would Be Hurt?

16 With the middle-class continuing to suffer, working people need to come together now more than ever. Corporate CEOs and billionaires are pushing Bill Sizemore’s bad ideas to the 2014 ballot. We need to say no to ballot measures that would undermine everyone’s wages and benefits, and would limit nurses and firefighters from negotiating for safe working conditions. Join us in standing up to the billionaires and corporate CEOs who are pushing this harmful agenda at the expense of middle-class families. How to Talk About This Measure: Summary

17 “Right to Work” “Right to Work for Less” Long discussions of labor law or history Jargon, like “collective bargaining” or “grievances” What To Avoid _____________ ____________________ ___________________________________ ___________________________________________

18 Remember… This is about protecting the middle-class. We need to stop this measure to protect the wages, benefits, and jobs of ALL Oregonians.

19 Remember… This is an attempt by corporate CEOs and billionaires to push their own agenda--to make it easier for them to cut benefits, hold down wages and ship jobs overseas.

20 Remember… We are under attack because without us, standards will be lowered for all of Oregon’s working people and middle-class families.
