NAQC Seminar Series December 9 and 11, 2009 North American Quitline Consortium Jessie E. Saul, Ph.D., Director of Research Update on NAQC’s Research Agenda & Infrastructure for Quitlines

What is the difference between a research agenda and a research infrastructure? Research agenda = prioritized areas and topics for research that fill existing gaps Research infrastructure = tools, protocols, and mechanisms that promote progress on the research agenda

Why develop a research agenda for quitlines? Commitment to adding to the evidence base Much we do not know Desire to focus our efforts

Process for developing a research agenda Build on previous work (NIDA conference, white paper) Key informant interviews (done) Focus groups with representatives of all quitline stakeholders (spring 2010) Draft agenda presented to NAQC members (summer 2010) Revisit and revise regularly

Initial tools for the research infrastructure Repository of quitline- and internet- related cessation research articles Listing of ongoing quitline and internet research projects Collection and development of sample agreements between researchers and quitlines Guidelines for multi-center studies

NAQC’s role in facilitating research Conduct outreach to research community educating about the existence of quitlines and the potential for research Consultation and guidance for researchers and quitlines in the research design process Facilitation of identifying interested quitlines and researchers to work together

How can I get involved? Participate in a focus group Join the research infrastructure workgroup Provide feedback on the draft research agenda Volunteer to participate in research studies
