Web 2.0 Websites for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language By Hui Xu University of Nebraska-Lincoln Nebraska Department of Education

What are Web 2.0 Websites?  Facilitate interactive information-sharing, user- centered design, and collaboration on the World Wide Web.  Give its users the free choice to interact or collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators.  Examples of Web 2.0 include: social-networking sites, blogs, wikis, video-sharing sites, etc.

What's a Wiki?  A Wiki is a website that lets any visitor become a participant. With a wiki you can create web pages that groups, friends, and families can edit and work on together.

“I can "statements  I can create a Wiki.  I can add a wide variety of media on my Wiki page.  I can edit another Wiki and post my comments on a discussion question in a Wiki.

Wiki for Teachers  “Wikispaces for teachers” provides you with a wiki suitable for classroom use;  Free and Ad-free;  Customize the security settings to decide who is allowed to view and edit your wiki space.

What can you do with a Wiki?

Create your Wiki  Sign up a Wiki.  Create a home page with a brief self-introduction, and include different types of media(e.g.: picture, audio, video, etc.)  Create 3 pages: “Photopeach”, “Voicethread” and “Lingt”. Post your technology products during the Chinese Teacher Training in your own Wiki.  Join my Wiki as a member at:  Edit my page “Chinese Teacher Training” by adding your self-introduction and your media. Please do not forget to include your name.  Comment on the discussion question on my Wiki.

PhotoPeach  PhotoPeach is an online slideshow creation tool that allows you to create a lively slideshow by moving your photos like a video with your choice of background music, and captions on each photo. Teachers will also be able to create quizzes based on certain photos.

“I can” statements  I can create a slideshow with captions and music.  I can create a quiz based on the pictures of the slideshow.  I can leave comments on my peer’s slideshow.

Create Your PhotoPeach Slideshow  Create a slideshow about one of your peers and make a quiz for us to guess who the person is;  Embed your slideshow in your Wiki and send it to another peer;  Leave comments on your peer’s slideshow.

Lingt  Lingt allows teachers to easily create online assignments that engage and assess students’ spoken and written performance.

“I can” statements  I can create an online assignment that incorporates voice/texts/videos/images.  I can assign an online assignment to a peer.  I can see my peer’s responses to my online assignment.

 You will be able to use images, texts, videos, and voice to create this online assignment. Students can respond with a voice or written response.

Send your students the assignment link: lingtlanguage.com/your-user-name. You can pretend to be your student and take the assignment yourself.

Click the assignment name to see your students’ responses.

Create Your Online Assignment  Using Lingt, working in pairs, you are going to create one online assignment from your lesson plan and send it to your partner.  Take an online assignment created by your partner.  Take an online assignment regarding ideas of the use of Lingt in a Chinese classroom at:

Voicethread  A Voicethread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos.  It allows you to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam).  Share a Voicethread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too.

“I can” statements  I can create a Voicethread that incorporates images/voice/text/audio/video.  I can leave written/spoken comments on another Voicethread created by a peer.

Create a Voicethread  Create one Voicethread based on “Brown Bear”/ “Zodiac Animals” and make comments on another peer’s Voicethread;  Comment on my Voicethread regarding ideas of the use of Voicethread in a Chinese classroom. The Voicethread can be found in my Wiki.
