Lesson Aims To learn the 8 Millennium Development Goals and what they are. To learn how Uganda is making progress in achieving its MDG’s. To learn how India is making progress in achieving its MDG’s.

Millennium Development Goals

Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day. Reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger. 18 million people per year die of poverty related deaths. 1 billion live on less than $1 a day Back

Ensure all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling. 100 million remain out of school. 46% of girls in the worlds poorest countries have no access to primary education. Back

Eliminate gender disparity at all levels. 1.3 billion people live in poverty – 70% of these are women. Women work two thirds of the worlds working hours – yet earn only 10% of the worlds income Back

Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under 5 years. Nearly 11 million children under the age of 5 die in the world every year. Back

Reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio. More than half a million women die in pregnancy and childbirth every year – 1 death every minute. Africa maternal mortality is 1 in 16. Back

Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS. Halt and begin the incidence of malaria and other major diseases. In Sub-Saharan Africa 4.1 million people have AIDS. Every day in Africa, 6500 people die. Back

Integrate principals of sustainable development into country policies and programmes – reverse the loss of environmental resources Reduce by a half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water. Achieve significant improvements in lives of at least 100 million people living in slums by 2020. Over 2.4 billion people lack access to proper sanitation and 1 billion people lack access to drinkable water. Back

Address the least developed countries special needs – including tariff free exports, debt relief and poverty reduction. Deal with national debt problems. In developing countries, develop decent and productive work for youths. In developing countries, provide access to affordable essential drugs. International trade is worth $10 million each minute – 70% of this is controlled by TNC’s. Back
