Euclid

Euclid’s Years of Life Euclid lived from around 330 BC – 220 BC. During the Hellenistic period.

Euclid’s Location Euclid lived in Ancient Alexandria, Egypt

Euclid’s Fame Euclid’s fame stems from the set of thirteen books on geometry that he compiled called “Elements.” “Elements” were used for more than 2000 years explaining geometry. Euclid is also known as “The Father of Geometry.”

d The “Elements” are a series of thirteen different books about geometrical discoveries. Books I-VI are about plane geometry. Books VII-IX cover the theory of numbers. Book X illustrates incommensurables. Finally, Books XI-XIII contain information about solid geometry.

h Euclid is called “The Father of Geometry” because of his many discoveries on geometry and his elements.

Here are some pages recovered from the original book Euclid wrote. These were written approximately 2300 years ago. “These are some of the oldest and most complete diagrams from Euclid's ‘Elements,’ and they’re a fragment of papyrus found among the remarkable rubbish piles of Oxyrhynchus in ”

Here is a picture of the “Elements” in modern day versions. This proves Euclid’s theories are passed down from generation to generation. No other book except the Bible has been so widely translated and circulated..

Polygons helped Euclid prove his theories of geometry. Now, by the end of Book IV, Euclid described how to construct many regular polygons.
