Control Panel Consists of many applets or wizards that are used to configure: Hardware Protocols Services By default they are group by category: Appearance and Themes Network and Internet Connections Add or Remove Programs Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices Performance and Maintenance Printers and Other Hardware User Accounts Date, Time, Language and Regional Options Accessibility Options Each of these categories are discussed on the following slides 4 Control Panel

Accessibility Options Its purpose is to allow configuration of features designed to accommodate physically challenged users. Keyboard Use Sticky Keys – CTRL, ALT and SHIFT keys behave as if they were stuck down when pressed. This feature can be accidentally turned on by a user, if they hold down one of these keys for more than 5 seconds, or presses it 5 times Use Filter Keys – Slows down the repeat rate, therefore reduces accidental repeated keystrokes Use Toggle Keys – Plays a tone when the Num Lock, Caps Lock or Scroll Lock key is pressed. Sound Apply visual warnings for hearing impaired Display captions for sounds and speech 5 Control Panel

Accessibility Options Display Use high contrast – Produces a high-contrast colour scheme Cursor Options – Modify width and blink rate of cursor Mouse Use numeric keypad to control mouse Various options to customize mouse behaviour – e.g. acceleration General Turn off accessibility features after idle period Warning messages when features turn-on turn-off Support serial key devices – devices connected to the serial port that provide keyboard input Apply settings to logon desktop Apply settings to defaults for new users Accessibility Wizard - Administrative Options Set timeout for features Default setting – for all users or for current user 6 Control Panel

Appearance and Themes Task Bar Three areas of the Task Bar: –Quick launch –Taskbar –Notification Area (a.k.a. System Tray) Lock the taskbar – prevent the taskbar from being moved elsewhere on the screen Auto-hide taskbar Keep taskbar on top of other widows Group similar buttons – grouping buttons for same application under one button Show quick launch Show clock – notification are Hide inactive icons – notification area Start Menu Adjust its appearance (Classic) Add submenus and shortcuts 9 Control Panel

Date, Time, Language, and Regional Settings Date and Time Adjust date and time and time zone When synchronizing with a Time Server- enable this feature on the most used O/S Regional and Language Options Standards and Formats – format information on display as per a particular country –Each format can be customized –CAUTION – can cause problems with software (even if formats have not been altered). E.g. date format in Canada is different than U.S. - some software may create filenames / DB transaction keys based on using an expected format Language – Affects spell checkers, special characters. Keyboard layout may be affected as well. 10 Control Panel

Network and Internet Connections Internet Options General – browser settings Security – Assign websites to security zones Privacy – Use of cookies. Websites that are not allowed to use cookies Content – Set limits on the types of material IE will display Connections – Set properties of Internet connection, or create a new one Programs – Which programs are to be used with specific web services ( , news groups, etc.) Advanced – Fine tuning Network Connections Create a New Connection opens a wizard –Connect to the Internet – new or existing dial-up account, DSL account, cable modem –Connect to the network at my workplace – Configures a dial-up or VPN connection –Set up a home or small office network – Starts Network Setup Wizard –Set up an advanced connection – Configures computer to accept incoming connections from another computer or create a direct connection to another computer via serial or parallel cable ore infrared. 11 Control Panel

Performance and Maintenance Administrative Tools Contains short-cuts to Microsoft Management Consoles (MMC) –Component Services –Computer Management –Event Viewer –Local Security Policy –Performance –Services Power Options Power schemes – e.g. when working from the battery of a notebook Advanced – showing an icon on the task bar, requesting a password when compute goes off standby. Hibernate – Write contents of memory to disk. When computer restarted this is read back and computer resumes where it left off APM – Advanced Power Management UPS – Uninterruptable Power Supply. The UPS hardware can communicate with WinXP when batteries are getting low. WinXP then performs an orderly shutdown 13 Control Panel

Performance and Maintenance Scheduled Tasks Scripts and programs to be automatically launched at specified times and dates, while PC is powered up, and Task Scheduler Service is running. Scheduler is shared by default, so tasks can be copies from one compute to another Can be set up to run under any valid user account, including the Administrator Multiple, different, user sessions can be run at once – each session inherits the security of the account it runs under System General tab describes system, RAM, O/S and its version, processor type and speed, registration names Computer Name – The name the computer advertises its as (must be unique on the network). The Network ID button, where you can choose between a domain or a workgroup. Hardware –Add Hardware Wizard – looks for new hardware and adds it –Driver Signing – Verification of digital signatures on device driver files –Device Manager – Allows configuration and troubleshooting of device hardware settings –Hardware Profiles – Used primarily to manage the different hardware profiles that a laptop PC may have (connected / disconnected from network, docking station, etc.) 14 Control Panel

Performance and Maintenance System Restore Allows you to define points that you can restore your system to Helpful in diagnosing a problem A good idea to set prior to making major changes to the PC. Automatic Updates A tool to maintain the latest patches to your O/S You have three choices: –Download the updates, and then notify the user when they are ready for installation –Notify the user when updates are available, and notify again after they have been downloaded –Turn off the service Remote Start, stop and configure Remote Assistance 15 Control Panel

User Accounts To be discussed in Session 7 Change a Account Change the name Create a password Change the picture Change the account type – user or administrator Delete the account Change the way users log on or off Use the Welcome Screen – a screen with a list of local accounts. Select the account and enter the password. Option can be cleared to display classic WinNt/2K logon box (that you see at the college) Use Fast User Switching – Enables you to switch to another user account without the need to close programs.
