Germany’s Changing Chapter 10 Section 1

Napoleon & Germany Napoleon ventured into Germany numerous times= taking more land. Napoleon annexed lands, dissolved Holy Roman Empire, and organized German states into the Rhine Confederation. How would this make people in those German states feel?

Prussia wants to build a strong unified Germany Empire, an empire which Prussia could lead. Why would it be beneficial for Prussia for Germany to be strong?

* Each state had their own kind of government structure. * To unify these states meant to get rid of those structures and create a new one.

These states went into the German Confederation.

Prussia created an economic union called Zollverein. Barriers between German states were dismantled.

Otto Von Bismarck Born into Prussia’s Junker class- Conservative land owning nobles.

Prussia did have a King- King William I William was king but a puppet to Bismarck.

Bismarck 1867 Bismarck became Chancellor (North German Confederation)& prime minister of Prussia.

Realpolitik= was realistic politics based on the needs of the state.

Bismarck built up the Prussian army. Bismarck was ready to have an aggressive foreign policy.

Main Events : 1  Bismarck first formed an alliance with Austria in Bismarck and Austria went after Schleswig and Holstein from Denmark. These areas were liberated.

2  In 1866 Bismarck attacked Austria –Austria Prussian War lasted 7 weeks. –Prussian victory.

3  Prussia then annexed other German states. Bismarck got rid of the German Confederation (that involved Austria) and replaced it with a German Confederation that was controlled and regulated by Prussia.

Do Now: How can Bismarck and Napoleon be compared as leaders? How could their ideas and outlooks on their countries be compared? VS.

Bismarck stated, “We had to avoid leaving behind any desire for revenge.”- Bismarck What does this quote mean?

Franco-Prussian War CAUSE: Bismarck played up the invasions of Napoleon I to instill fear. Bismarck wanted to start a war; he misprinted information making it seem like King William I had insulted the French ambassador.

EFFECT: Result was that Napoleon III (nephew to Napoleon I) declared war. France lost horribly.

William I eventually took title of Kaiser or emperor of Germany.

January 1871 German nationalists celebrated the Second Reich or empire. Bismarck drafted a-2 house legislature. 1  Bundesrat (upper house) appointed rulers of German states. 2  Reichstag (lower house) elected by universal male suffrage
