COMMON CORE – A NATIONAL PERSPECTIVE Over 30 states involved with implementation of the Common Core “Coaches” have been assigned to help each state team Eight states – DE, VT, WI, ND, MO, ID, NM, HI Each state is making progress Focus on Pre-K Disciplinary Literacy On-line training for all audiences “Resource Library” for state use

Standards are benchmarked to international standards (Teach Less – Learn more) Common Core Standards ARE Universal set of standards Based on input from educators from across the country A road map for teachers and students Common Core Standards ARE NOT A set curriculum for all classrooms Required for all classrooms A destination

W HY IS THE C OMMON C ORE I NITIATIVE IMPORTANT ? Ensure that every child across the country is given the tools to succeed Standards that are clearer and higher than many state standards Efficiency in formative and summative assessments Efficiency in the development of textbooks, digital media and other teaching materials

W HO HAS ADOPTED THE C OMMON C ORE STANDARDS ? As of May 18 th, 45 states have adopted the Common Core All but MT, ND, NE, TX, MN (partial adoption), VA SD adopted in November, 2010

W HAT ARE THE K EY P OINTS IN M ATHEMATICS ? Kindergarten – Fifth Grade Solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. Kdg. Standards follow recommendations from National Research Council’s Early Math Panel report Hands-on learning is emphasized.

W HAT ARE THE K EY P OINTS IN M ATHEMATICS ? Middle School – Grades 6 – 8 Standards are robust and provide rich preparation for high school mathematics Mastery at grade 7 will provide strong preparation for algebra in grade 8 High School – Grades 9 – 12 Emphasis on practical application of mathematics to real world issues Emphasis on “mathematical modeling” – the use of math and statistics to analyze empirical situations

W HAT ARE THE K EY P OINTS IN E NGLISH /L ANGUAGE A RTS ? Reading Provide a “staircase of increasing complexity so that all students are ready for the demands of college and career-level reading Sample texts are provided but no reading lists are offered Certain types of content are mandated including classic myths, American literature and stories from around the world. Decisions on teaching processes are deferred

W HAT ARE THE K EY P OINTS IN E NGLISH /L ANGUAGE A RTS ? Writing Emphasis on writing logical arguments based on substantive claims Research – both short and longer term – is emphasized Samples of student writing helps to establish performance levels Speaking and Listening Require that students gain, evaluate and present information through listening and speaking as well as through media Academic discussions in one-to-one, small group and whole class settings

W HAT ARE THE K EY P OINTS IN E NGLISH /L ANGUAGE A RTS ? Language Grow vocabularies through conversations, instruction and reading Make informed, skillful choices among the many ways to express themselves Media and Technology Media and technology are integrated throughout the standards

H OW WILL THE C OMMON C ORE S TANDARDS BE MEASURED ? USDOE has made a $360 million investment in the development of assessments & curricular supports SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Four year grant - $175 million 25 states have signed on – including South Dakota Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) Four year grant - $150 million 26 states & District of Columbia

H OW WILL THE IMPLEMENTATION BE SUPPORTED ? Gates Foundation and Pearson Foundation $20 million suite of grants Creation of 24 “courses” 11 in math for grades K – in English/Language Arts for grades K – 12 Four courses will be available free online through Gates Foundation Full 24 course system – with accommodating tools – will be available for purchase Each course – 150 day curriculum which includes social networking, animation and gaming

Grade level standards in Math/ELA will be altered State level tests will be modified to reflect new standards (2013 – 14) Expectations will be increased based on new standards Emphasis on higher order thinking skills and relevancy of learning objectives Close the gap in preparedness for college and careers Shared understanding of what students are expected to learn, no matter where they live or how often they move
