Games have certain core characteristics that build engagement; these transfer over into learning activities as well (Dickey, 2005) Example principles: Focused goals, optimal levels of challenge, clear standards, protection from initial failures, novelty & choice Consider also: Flow (Czikszhentmihalyi)
