Research Paper Science Fair Essay My name is Cole Forgerson, my partner Nick Kraieski and I have done a science fair project. Our theme was “How does acid rain affect the growth of plants?” We started the first week of December. We did all of our research for our project in the MCAA science lab. Our hypothesis was that the acid rain would kill the plants. It was a very interesting project, you just wait and see. First was the research. Acid rain is any form of precipitation that is unusually acidic. It has harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals, roads and/or bridges. Acid rain is formed by fossil fuels that form sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide. When they mix together with the water vapor in the air they produce forms of sulfuric acid H2S04 and nitric acid HN03. The next step was to gather our materials, but they were already gathered for us. We used 2 spray bottles, lemon juice, water, paper, a pencil and 2 plants.

. Next we came up with a method. Nick and I thought of one way to do the experiment, but Mrs. Throop thought of a better method for us to do. The plan was for Nick and I to mix the water with the lemon juice to be our acidic liquid. We put regular water into a spray bottle and our acidic liquid into a different spray bottle. We labeled the bottles and labeled the plants. We sprayed the plants for five days and wrote down how the plants were reacting to either the water or the acidic liquid. Finally, we started the project. The first day or two we did not notice much difference in either plant. They looked pretty much the same. On day three there was a noticeable difference between the plants. The plant with the plain water was 4.4 inches tall and had some flowers and green leaves. The acid plant was only 4.2 inches and most of the flowers were dying and had turned grayish. By day four the plain watered plant was still growing and looked healthy and was sprouting. The acidic liquid plant was looking worse and more flowers were dying. In conclusion the acidic liquid plants died. We were happy our hypothesis was correct. Almost all of the flowers affected by the acidic liquid died. The water plants were fine and sprouting. The experiment was successful and the project was awesome.

Conclusion Our hypothesis was right!! But sadly we had to sacrifice the plant that we gave acid in the name of science!!  Please click above to see our movie
