The Gurmukhi Script This was a far-reaching step, it gave the Sikhs a written language distinct form the written language of the Hindus and Muslims ( who used Sanskrit and Arabic) the language which only the privileged could understand and use. Guru Jee thus fostered a sense of the Sikhs being a separate people. Guru Jee also collected the hymns of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee which had no particular script, Guru Jee used Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee’s hymns to create a new script called Gurmukhi (from the mouth of the Guru) ) the written form of the Panjabi language. Guru Jee gave the common people this language as it is simple to learn and write. Sri Guru Angad Dev Jee inspired people to lead healthy lives. According to Guru Jee, if you are physically fit only then you can pursue higher goals in life, because a sound mind can exist only in a sound body. He provided opportunities to underprivileged sections of the society to maintain good health. He encouraged all people to be involved in wrestling bouts or Mal Akharas to compete in physical competitions. This was again his way of doing away with social taboos of people of lower caste not having physical contact with higher castes. These steps initiated by him laid the foundation for a spiritually, educated and enlightened, healthy Sikh community, without distinctions of caste and creed. 4. Physical Fitness TASK: Answer the below questions in full sentences. 1.What does Mal Akhara mean? (2 marks) 2.Identify and briefly describe two reasons why physical exercise is important (4 marks)
