HANNAH SWANSON Period 4

WHY CHOOSE MY TOPIC? o My topic is about the music preferences of high school students. o I love music and I decided to choose this topic because, being a high school student who’s music preference changes all the time, I decided to see if everyone else was like me. o Also, I have realized that my music preference will change over time and be completely different as I get older than it is at the moment.

MY TOPIC o For my final project, I asked high school students about their preferences in music genres. o I divided my survey to answer a few major questions: o If they were a male or female o What class they were in o What kind of genre of music they preferred o If they listened to different artists as a kid o If they think their preference will change as they get older o And if they prefer newer age music or older age music o In total, I surveyed 142 high school students.

WHO LIKED WHAT?

WHO LISTENED TO DIFFERENT ARTISTS AS A KID?

WHO THINKS THEIR PREFERENCE WILL CHANGE?

WHO PREFERRED OLDER MUSIC OR NEWER MUSIC?

CLAIM #1 o My first claim is that more than 50% of students thought that their preference in music would change as they get older. o H o : p 1 ≤.5 o H a : p 1 >.5 (claim) o α =.05 o x = 77 o n = 142 o 1PropZTest o.157 >.05 FAIL TO REJECT o Translation: There is not enough evidence to support the claim that more than 50% of students thought that their preference in music would change as they got older.

CLAIM #2 o My second claim is that more females preferred newer music than males. o H o : p 1 ≤ p 2 o H a : p 1 > p 2 (claim) o α =.05 o x 1 = 73 o n 1 = 142 o p 1 =.51 o x 2 = 31 o n 2 = 142 o p 2 =.22 o 2PropZTest o <.05 REJECT o Translation: There is enough evidence to support the claim that more females preferred new age music than males.

CLAIM #3 o My third claim is that more upperclassman like dubstep, or techno, than lowerclassman. o H o : p 1 ≤ p 2 o H a : p 1 > p 2 (claim) o α =.05 o x 1 = 14 o n 1 = 26 o p 1 =.1 o x 2 = 26 o n 2 = 142 o p 2 =.08 o 2PropZTest o.289 >.05 FAIL TO REJECT o Translation: There is not enough evidence to support the claim that more upperclassman like dubstep than lowerclassman.

WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY? o I would try to get more surveys so that my data was more sufficient and accurate. o I should have been more specific with the question concerning newer music and older music. o If I had been more specific with that, then maybe more people would have answered truthfully because they would have understood what I meant.

IN CONCLUSION… o One out of my three theories was correct. I was surprised about my first claim which was that 50% of students thought their preference in music would change as they got older and that more upperclassman didn’t like dubstep more than lowerclassman. o The claim I was right about was that more females prefer newer music than males do which does not surprise me. o Music will always progress and change and people will always change and adapt with it.
