 Cystic fibrosis (SIS-tik fi-BRO-sis), or CF, is an inherited disease of the secretary (see-KREH- tor-ee) glands. Secretary glands include glands that make mucus and sweat.

 abnormalities in the glands that produce sweat and mucus This may cause a loss of salt. A loss of salt may cause an upset in the balance of minerals in the blood, abnormal heart rhythms, and, possibly, shock.  thick mucus that accumulates in the lungs and intestines This may cause malnutrition, poor growth, frequent respiratory infections, breathing difficulties, and/or lung disease.

 Loosen and remove the thick, sticky mucus from your lungs Prevent and control infections in your lungs  Prevent and control infections in your lungs  Provide adequate nutrition

 There is no way to prevent cystic fibrosis. Screening those with a family history of the disease may detect the cystic fibrosis gene in % of carriers, depending on the test used.
