ION COMMISSIONING REVISITED 1 Thanks to: John Jowett, Walter Venturini. Matteo Solfaroli

LHCb OFF Single bunch from SPS Latest settings cloned and ionized Bumps in collision beam process trimmed Injection scheme – 2 bunches – collisions displaced Prerequisites 2

Extraction to downstream TEDs  Check lines Cross calibration of orbit reading with protons:  Inject high intensity p bunch (LOW BPM sensitivity)  Correct against reference orbit  Inject low intensity p bunch and record orbit (HIGH BPM sensitivity)  Inject an Ions bunch and check that orbit is the same  Define it as Ions reference orbit Check injection oscillations, losses etc. Check energy matching Injection 3 One shift

Beam parameter and associated BI checks  tune, Q’, lifetime, beam sizes RF  energy, phase, syncho Skip optics measurement (?) Loss maps Beam dump Asynchronous dump 450 GeV 4 One shift

Blowup off, TFB off OFB on, QFB on Frequency modulation? Collimators at injection settings throughout Beam loss and lifetime through the cycle  Watch chromaticity without TFB Reference orbit in squeeze  as for protons (?) Collide but miss  and adjust crossing angle bumps Test ramp & squeeze (2 bunches) 5 One shift

Subsequent ramp with the same collimator settings as for protons till the end of the squeeze, then:  Keep IP8 separation and crossing angle  Crossing angle IP microrad  Crossing angles off in IP 1 & 5 Set-up of TCTs around new collision orbit As a result only one collimator set-up to be done at top energy Collimation setup 6 One shift

Loss maps:  4 configurations (~4 fills) for ions: Injection Flat top(?) End of squeeze Collisions At least one asynchronous dump at 3.5 TeV SHADOWING OF ZDC  TCTs somewhat withdrawn to avoid this  Should be OK – check loss maps Loss maps shifts

Schedule… 8

First stable beams: 2 x 2 Push through to 20 bunches per beam Monitor & adjust  RF  Feedbacks  Losses, lifetimes etc. If clean head for full complement Higher intensity 9
