Teaching the language of Short Stories Lesson Planning

THEME - PROCEDURE Teacher gives definition of theme: central idea, purpose, concern of a story Teacher reads out a short story (eg The Tortoise and Hare) and states the theme T. gives other examples of popular legends, fables, fairy tales T. ask students to give themes

T gives examples of how to construct a sentence when writing about the theme T divide class in groups of 3-4 persons Students find the theme(s) of the story Each group reads out their statements on themes Class selects the best theme and statement and state their reasons for their selection
