The Bible Introduction to Old Testament

The Bible Bible: “book” Holy: “godly; set apart; special” Holy Bible = 1 Timothy 3:16 1 Timothy 3:16 qeo, pneustoj 2 Peter 1:20-21

Two Parts of the Bible Old Testament New Testament How many books are in the OT? How many books are in the NT?

Two Themes of the Bible Law: God’s Will for mankind (Good Stuff!) Gospel: Good News (in Christ Jesus) Using the acronym SOS: Law: Shows our Sin Law: Shows our Sin Gospel: Shows our Savior Gospel: Shows our Savior

Books of the Old Testament GROUP 1 The Books of Moses (the Books of the Law) Genesis Genesis Exodus Exodus Leviticus Leviticus Numbers Numbers Deuteronomy Deuteronomy Moses by Michaelangelo San Pietro in Vincoli

Genesis “in the beginning” “in the beginning” (bereshith) What does Genesis 1:1 reveal about God? He made everything He made everything He was already in existence; He was already in existence; had no beginning; has no end (eternal) had no beginning; has no end (eternal)

Overview of Chapters 1-11 Creation Fall (Adam and Eve) Cain murders Able Noah and the Flood Tower of Babel Main Point: God provides -- People sin -- God judges -- God provides – etc. God provides -- People sin -- God judges -- God provides – etc.

Covenant with Abraham Chapters 1-11 show God continuing to ‘start over’ with his sinful people. Chapter 12 = Divine Covenant Divine – God; godly; deity Divine – God; godly; deity Covenant – a promise; a deal; an agreement Covenant – a promise; a deal; an agreement A Divine Covenant is NOT dependant on the behavior of Mankind, but on God’s promise. God will make His covenant be fulfilled. A Divine Covenant is NOT dependant on the behavior of Mankind, but on God’s promise. God will make His covenant be fulfilled.

God’s Covenant with Abraham LandOffspring Blessing to the Nations

Abraham’s Kids Abraham had two sons: Ishmael and Isaac Ishmael: conceived through his ‘relations’ with the slave woman named Haggar. (Not pleasing in God’s sight!) Isaac: conceived after Abraham was circumcised (sign of the covenant) with his wife, Sarah. (This is pleasing in God’s sight) Isaac is the son through whom the savior would one day come. (Muslims think that Ishmael is the chosen son through which the Promised One would come…Mohammed, the prophet)

Isaac’s Family Isaac has two sons Jacob and Esau Jacob was the younger, but received the Birthright and Blessing through conniving ways.

Jacob’s Family Has 12 sons These are known as the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph is one of these sons.

Joseph Genesis ends with the story of his life He is sold into slavery (Egypt) Grows strong and powerful 2 nd in command in Egypt Provides for his family during famine Great story of forgiveness with brothers! A Christ-like figure

1 st Commandment You shall have no other gods. What does this mean? We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.

2 nd Commandment You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie, or deceive by His name, but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.
