Poetry 4 th Grade Bilingual Poetry Unit

What is Poetry?? Well, the dictionary says poetry is: “the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts” What does that mean? – It means poetry can be: ANYTHING you feel ANYTHING you enjoy ANY story, emotion, sight, sound, that you put into some type of order and has some type of rhythm

What is Rhythm? Rhythm is “movement or procedure with uniform or patterned recurrence of a beat, accent, or the like.” So, lets say you are listening to some Salsa and Merengue music – How does the singer know how fast to say the words? – If you tap your feet or even dance the music how do you know how fast to go?

Rhythm cont. Rhythm allows you to do all of these things! Rhythm also creates poetry – For instance lets recite this poem: Today I managed something that I’ve never done before: I turned in this week’s spelling quiz and got a perfect score. Although my score was perfect, it appears I’m not too bright. I got a perfect zero— not a single answer right.

Rhyming What creates the rhythm of the poem? – The pairs of lines that rhyme called a couplet What makes something rhyme? – The endings! Can you think of examples of words that rhyme????

Types of Poems Acrostic: The first letter of each line of the poem forms a word going down. This word is the subject of the poem. Dashing after the rabbit so fast, Oh No! Will she be able to get him? Gosh looks like she couldn’t catch him this time! What is the subject of my poem?

Limerick A limerick has a total if 5 lines with lines 1,2, and 5 rhyming and lines 3 and 4 rhyming Grade 4 There once was a class in grade four Who worked so hard they were sore Then one sunny day They all ran away And were never heard from anymore

Haiku A Japanese poem that has 3 lines with 5 syllables in the first, 7 in the second, and 5 in the third. It usually focuses on Nature. A yellow circle, You help warm and light the earth and make days brighter. What did I write about?

Poetry in Your Life! What examples of Poetry can you think of? Have you ever used poetry without thinking about it? How?
