Opportunities & Challenges High geothermal gradient = ˚C per km Aim to produce water at 70 – 100 ˚C Aim for production rate of 10 – 20 l/s Post installation: Zero Carbon Heat for 50+ years with very low OPEX × High CAPEX – drilling a well to 2500 m is relatively costly × A first exploratory borehole could fail to achieve an economic flow-rate New data is expensive to obtain, but opportunity to combine with unconventional hydrocarbon exploration eg. Shale gas/CBM/UCG

The way forward Scottish Government assists a demonstration project, which will de- risk further developments, attracting private investment. We aim to locate the best area for an HSA test borehole for any demonstration project. Heat demand creation through collaboration of private and public sector for widespread installation of district heating schemes. Fife Geothermal Licensing regime – simplified planning process. Consistent long-term RHI incentives
