Levers Investigation 2

Activity 3 and 4 0 Class-2 Lever: 0 Class-3 Lever: Class-1 Lever: FLE : F, L, and E stand for the part of the lever system that is in the middle of the lever. So the fulcrum is in the middle of the class-1 lever, the load is in the middle of the class-2 lever, and the effort is applied in the middle of the class-3 lever system

Vocabulary 0 Class-1 Levers: Have the fulcrum in the middle and the load and effort at the ends. 0 Class-2 Levers: have the load in the middle and the fulcrum and effort at the ends 0 Class-3 Levers: have the effort in the middle and the fulcrum and the loads at the ends.

Lever Diagrams 0 There is a way to record what you find out about levers. It is called a diagram. A diagram is a drawing that explains the relationship of the parts of a system, in this case a lever system.

How would you draw the class one lever I have presented to you? 0 The fulcrum, load and effort are represented by the letter F in a, the letter L in a, and the letter E in a. 0 The arrows on the load and the effort point in the direction they are pushing or pulling. Drawing Lever Diagrams

Demonstration 2: Load at 15cm and the scale (effort) at 15 cm How would you diagram this lever?

Your turn: 0 You may arrange the fulcrum, load and effort any way they like, and DIAGRAM the lever systems in the boxes on your worksheet. 0 You NEED at least TWO of each class of lever.

Vocabulary Diagram: a drawing that describes the relationship of all the parts of a system.

Content/Inquiry Entries 0 How can we record information about lever design? 0 A diagram uses a system of symbols and conventions to communicate information about lever diagrams

Part 3: Real-World Levers Class-1Class-2 Class-3 Load can be either a mass that you lift or a RESISTANCE that you need to overcome. The tight lid on the can requires a lever to get it loose. The resistance is the load. You try to lift the lid up, so the resistance (load), is acting down.

Let’s try one together 0 What class lever is the screwdriver when it is used to pry the lid off a can? 0 What you are trying to lift the lid off a can of putty or paint, there is o metal cube to be lifted. Where is the load, and what direction is the load acting?

Can you draw the diagram of this lever?

Content/Inquiry Entries 0 Where are levers found in everyday use? Many common tools use levers: Scissors, pliers, bottle openers, hammers, wheelbarrows, and brooms. 0 What happens to effort required to lift a load as the load moves closer and closer to the fulcrum in a class-1, class-2, and class-3 lever? Effort is reduce as the load moves closer to the fulcrum.
