What does this image show and what does it have to do with inequalities?

How can we reduce socio- economic inequalities? LO: To know what measures will help reduce socio-economic inequalities. To know some specific case studies and analyse how useful they are.

The City Challenge City Challenge is a highly targeted drive to crack the cycle of under-achievement among disadvantaged children in primary and secondary schools in three urban regions: London, The Black Country and Greater Manchester. By 2011, the main outcomes of the programme are: a sharp drop in underperforming schools, particularly focusing on English and Maths more outstanding schools significant improvements in educational outcomes for disadvantaged children.

The Greater Manchester Challenge Collaboration transfers existing knowledge and practice, but more importantly, it also helps to generate context-specific ‘new’ knowledge. Collaboration transfers existing knowledge and practice, but more importantly, it also helps to generate context-specific ‘new’ knowledge. Families of Schools is a way to group schools based on pupil characteristics and prior attainment, making it easy to identify other schools which might face similar challenges to you and to compare data and approaches.

Educational Maintenance Allowance ‘If your child stays in learning after 16, Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) could give them up to £30 a week to help with their costs. It won't affect a penny of any benefits you get’ 6 th Form students can earn up to £30 per week for staying on at school if their parents earn less than £30,000 per year. How do you think this helps to reduce socio- economic inequalities in urban areas?

Your Right to Buy For many years council housing was one of the backbones of British living. But since the middle of the 1980s there’s been a move to sell off much of the stock of council houses to the people who live in them as part of the movement towards private ownership. Since the big initial sell-off, which saw people who’d never dreamed of it before owning their own properties, it’s something that’s continued, and if you’re a council tenant, you may very well be eligible to own your house or flat. The really good news is that, if you qualify, you’ll be able to buy it at a discount. Fill out a form if you have lived in your house for more than 2 years and you may be able to buy your house. If you have lived in the property for more than 20 years you can get a 50% discount on the sale.

Inequalities Where are they and who do they affect? –Healthcare –Education –Housing –Work –…–…–…–… Can the responses work? How do people who are born into a low-income family work their way out of urban poverty?

There are always 2 sides to every City…

Essay Question Will we ever see socio-economic inequalities in our urban areas completely irradiated?(15 marks) –Explain the reasons for –Explain the reasons against –Write your conclusions –Add your own research –Due next lesson!
