National Lab Day and the MSP Program Jan Cuny National Science Foundation National Lab Day 1/13/09

Overall, 42% of schools reported that they were not well equipped in the area of laboratory science, affecting roughly 14.6M students. Source: Analysis of data of the 2000 national Survey of Science and Mathematics Education for the Committee on High School Science Laboratories, as reported in America’s Lab Report:Investigations in to High School Science, NRC Lab experiences for US Students

A national barn-raising for hands-on STEM learning. What is National Lab Day?

A nationwide initiative to form local communities of support around STEM teachers, connecting them to volunteers and scientists, IT professionals, engineers, and mathematicians who will share their expertise and their excitement and passion for their disciplines. What is National Lab Day?

Net Day Precedent 20,000 volunteers wired 20% percent of CA schools to the Internet 2,500 wiring kits donated by telephone companies

National Lab Day Launch 11/23/09

NLD Partners Organizations: NSTA, American Chemical Society Foundations: Hidary, MacArthur, Gates Federal agencies: National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Dept of Energy + over 200 Professional Societies, organizations, and federal agencies, with over 6 million members

NLD1 10,000 projects by May 1 Reaching 1+ million students Establishing ongoing relationships between teachers, volunteers and STEM-based professionals

What can you do?

NLD and the MSP Program MSP “is designed to improve the content knowledge of teachers and the performance of students in the areas of mathematics and science by … bringing … teachers together with scientists, mathematicians, and engineers to improve their teaching skills…” National Lab Day can help!

What could your MSP do? Promote, and facilitate the participation of the schools you work with. Help us to identify the NLD needs of those schools Develop multidisciplinary projects and/or projects that cross school boundaries

What could your MSP do? (cont.) Disseminate your great projects and best practices through NLD Encourage faculty at your institution to get involved Encourage your grad students to take the lead in organizing other grad student involvement

What could your MSP do? (cont.) Have undergraduates in service learning projects get involved Enlist the support of community organizations and businesses Prepare teachers to better provide high quality, hands-on, inquiry-based science

What could your MSP do? (cont.) Prepare scientists to work effectively in classrooms Help us to understand what makes a successful (or unsuccessful) NLD project Give us your ideas and feedback
