God’s acts of salvation God’s declaring people righteous –A relationship, rather than an ethical quality People responding by acting justly –Acts of compassion –Demonstrated most fully in Jesus  Notice what righteousness is not Observance of legal codes

Fourth Beatitude  “For they shall be satisfied.”  The pursuit of righteousness will be satisfied How will the pursuit be satisfied? Who will satisfy?  Righteousness is not about behavior that brings approval and praise The world can give approval to behavior  Righteousness is a relationship that brings peace Only God can restore relationships and bring lasting peace

Law and Righteousness  Case Studies  “You have heard… But I say to you…” Murder  Anger is also murder Adultery  Lust is also adultery Divorce  Divorce can become adultery Oaths  Oaths are unnecessary and evil Retaliation  Don’t retaliate, respond in kindness Hate enemies  Love your enemies  Righteousness is not about legal codes and external morality, but about an inner attitude

Law and Righteousness 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 

Law and Righteousness 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:43-48 ESV

Piety and Righteousness “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 6:1 ESV
