Director, Defense Research & Engineering (DDR&E) is the principal staff assistant and advisor to the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (USD(AT&L)) and the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense for research and engineering matters. Research and engineering includes Science and Technology programs (consisting of Basic and Applied Research, and Advanced Technology Development), and Advanced Component Development and Prototypes programs.
