For Real Change that Really Works … Transtheoretical Model of Change

Objectives In this presentation, you will learn about: The stages of change in the Transtheoretical model Copyright©2011. Cengage Learning. All Rights Reserved.

Transtheoretical Model of Change Pre- Contemplation PreparationActionMaintenanceTermination The Six Stages of Change Click each stage to learn more. Transtheoretical model: A model of behavioral change that focuses on the individual’s decision making: it states that an individual progresses through a sequence of six stages (as described below) as he or she makes a change in behavior Click here to go to the Knowledge Check Copyright©2011. Pre-contemplation Click the image below to learn more. Desiree has joined a new office where everyone goes to the smoking zone in-between breaks. She is a non-smoker, but finds it necessary to accompany her colleagues, to be part of the group. This becomes her initiation into smoking and before she knows it, she is smoking six to seven cigarettes a day. She does not like it but has never really given it a thought. Pre-contemplation: In this stage of the behavior change, you are unaware of the problem, not thinking of or wanting to change. Click here to go back to the stages of change. Copyright©2011. Contemplation Contemplation: In this stage of the behavior change, you are aware of problem and thinking about taking action. Click the image below to learn more. Desiree starts coughing and develops yellow stained teeth. Her taste buds don't work like they used to and her tongue dries up more often. She gets winded walking up the stairs. She realizes the down-side of the addiction and wants to quit. Click here to go back to the stages of change. Copyright©2011. Cengage Learning. All Rights Reserved.

Preparation Preparation: In this stage of the behavior change, you make a clear decision and prepare yourself physically and mentally for the task at hand. Click the image below to learn more. Desiree decides that beginning Monday, she will stop going to the smoking zone in the office and exercise her lungs. She checks out local yoga center that her friend had recommended. She even thinks of getting up a little early and packing lunch from home, thus not having to go to the cafeteria adjoining the smoking zone. Click here to go back to the stages of change. Action Action: In this stage of the behavior change, you’ve finished preparing and now take action. Click the image below to learn more. Desiree joins the yoga class and learns breathing techniques. She packs home food and has it at her desk. She even gets a colleague to join her. She gets her teeth whitened and learns new tips on oral hygiene. Outside office, she avoids being at places where people smoke in large numbers. Click here to go back to the stages of change. Copyright©2011. Cengage Learning. All Rights Reserved.

Maintenance Maintenance: In this stage of the behavior change, you have been engaged in the new behavior for a while and are working to prevent relapse. You are also trying to maintain or improve on progress made so far. Click the image below to learn more. Desiree has not been smoking for over six-months now. She has been able to resist the urge to smoke. Although, she has accompanied her colleagues to the smoking zone a couple of times, she has not smoked herself. She realizes that passive smoking is not good for her either, so she decides to stop accompanying her peers to the smoking zone. She keeps her dad updated, about the progress she has made and the positive impact it has on her health. Click here to go back to the stages of change. Copyright©2011. Cengage Learning. Termination Termination: In this stage of the behavior change, the change has become status quo and you have transitioned to a new life. Click the image below to learn more. After 3 years, Desiree has never had the thought of lighting up a cigarette. Even better, she joins a community center as a volunteer which teaches young- adults how to quit addictions.
