Unit 1001 Safe working practices in construction © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted Accidents on site Most accidents are caused by human error. Accidents happen when someone is: ●hurrying ●not paying enough attention to what they are doing ●working without having received the correct training.

Unit 1001 Safe working practices in construction © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted Reporting accidents All accident and near misses must be reported and recorded in the accident book. The information recorded needs to include: ●who was involved ●what happened ●where it happened ●the day and time of the accident ●any witnesses to the accident ●the address of the injured person ●what PPE was being worn ●what first aid treatment was given. What are some of the major accidents that can happen in the workplace?

Unit 1001 Safe working practices in construction © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted Who to report to? ●First-aiders – all accidents must be reported to first-aiders ●Supervisors – inform your supervisor of any accident so they can stop work if necessary ●Safety officers – alerted by the supervisor, they assess the area to check it is safe ●HSE – if death or major injury occurs they will investigate ●Managers – may need to report to Head office and the HSE ●Emergency services – should be called as soon as possible What is the effect of accidents happening on site?

Unit 1001 Safe working practices in construction © Pearson Education 2010 Printing and photocopying permitted First aid If there are more than five people on a site, a qualified first-aider must be present at all times. Who are the first-aiders at your place of work? What should you do if you discover an accident?
