BYOT - Bring Your Own Technology by: Karen Dean

What is BYOT? Bring your own technology programs, sometimes called bring your own device (BYOD), allow students to use their own devices, such as smart phones, ipods, ipads, tablets, etc., to aid learning and instruction in the classroom.

Voice Recordings Students can record themselves on their devices. This is a great resource if you don't have access to a foreign language lab. Students speak the target language and replay it. They can replay it for themselves, partners, the whole class, or the teacher. This can be done even if your school does not have Wi-Fi.

QR Codes Quick Response (QR) codes are easy to use because all students need is a smart phone or ipod with a camera and a QR code reader app installed.

Ideas for QR codes Link to a website - You can link any website, so students just scan the code to open the site. Scavenger Hunt - Students scan the codes at each stop to get the next clue, location, etc. Link to student projects – When you have students create prezis, vokis, etc., have them create a QR code so all students can quickly access the projects.

Ideas for QR Codes Recordings - Create a recording in the target language. Students scan the QR code to hear the recording. Enhance assignments - Include QR codes on handouts or in power points so students can scan them to visit websites that offer further explanation, videos, practice activities, etc. Interactive Bulletin Boards –Many different ways to use this. One example is to place QR codes next to pictures of artists so studetns can learn more about them and see their works of art.

Pinterest - Follow me! I have several boards for education, BYOT, and foreign language. You can choose which boards you want to follow. This is an excellent resource for teachers. Let other teachers do the research for you!

Student Reminders You can send students reminders as text messages to their phones with this website. Make sure your students have unlimited texting before you have them sign up.

Classroom Management Dock devices Screens up Hands up Be consistent Experiment with seating arrangements and move around the room.

Live Response Polling – This is where I got my start with BYOT. Before we had WiFi, students texted in their response. The still love it! This can be done even if your school does not have Wi-Fi.

Floobaroo Tired of grading papers? – this is a script that runs in Google drive. You create an assessment, the students type in their answers, and the program grades it for you!

Websites – grammar practice – create flashcards for your students create games with your vocabulary or use games others have already made – advanced students listen to Spanish videos and complete activities newsmap.jp newsmap.jp – view trending articles in countries all over the world. Click the link to read the article. - pre-made language learning games

Websites upload a picture of yourself and make the picture talk create an avitar and record your voice voice recordings create free 30 second videos - students create word clouds that look like them

Apps currency converters - students convert U.S. dollars to foreign currencies Text Gag - create fake text messages in the TL Street View and Google Maps - students can tour cities around the world AutoRap – students can record themselves and the App turns it into a song.

What have you used successfully?
