Presentation transcript:

Joshua 22:10-11 ESV 10 And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben & the people of Gad & the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan... imposing size. 11 And the people of Israel heard it said,

Joshua 22:11 ESV “Behold, the people of Reuben & the people of Gad & the half-tribe of Manasseh have built the altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the people of Israel.”

Joshua 22:12-13 ESV 12 And when the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh to make war against them. 13 Then the people of Israel sent to the people of Reuben & the people of Gad & the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas

Joshua 22:13-16 ESV the son of Eleazar the priest, 14 & with him ten chiefs, one from each of the tribal families of Israel... & they said to them, 16 “Thus says the whole congregation of the L ORD, ‘What is this breach of faith that you have committed against the God of Israel in turning away this day

Joshua 22:16-17 ESV from following the L ORD by building your- selves an altar this day in rebellion against the L ORD ? 17 Have we not had enough of the sin at Peor from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, & for which there came a plague upon the congregation of the L ORD,

Joshua 22:18-19 ESV 18 that you too must turn away this day from following the L ORD ? And if you too rebel against the L ORD today then tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel. 19 But now, if the land of your possession is unclean, pass over into the L ORD 's land

Joshua 22:19 ESV where the L ORD 's tabernacle stands, & take for yourselves a possession among us. Only do not rebel against the L ORD or make us as rebels by building for your- selves an altar other than the altar of the L ORD our God.

Joshua 22:20 ESV 20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah break faith in the matter of the devoted things, & wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And he did not perish alone for his iniquity.’”

Joshua 22:21-22 ESV 21 Then the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, & the half-tribe of Manasseh said in answer to the heads of the families of Israel, 22 “The Mighty One, God, the L ORD ! The Mighty One, God, the L ORD ! He knows; & let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith

Joshua 22:22-24 ESV against the L ORD, do not spare us today 23 for building an altar to turn away from following the L ORD. Or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings on it, may the L ORD himself take vengeance. 24 No, but we did it from fear

Joshua 22:24-25 ESV that in time to come your children might say to our children, ‘What have you to do with the L ORD, the God of Israel? 25 For the L ORD has made the Jordan a boundary between us & you... You have no portion in the L ORD.’

Joshua 22:25-27 ESV So your children might make our children cease to worship the L ORD. 26 Therefore we said, ‘Let us now build an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice, 27 but to be a witness between us & you, & between our generations after us, that we do perform the service of the L ORD

Joshua 22:27-28 ESV in his presence with our burnt offerings & sacrifices & peace offerings And we thought, ‘If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, “Behold, the copy of the altar of the L ORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings,

Joshua 22:28-29 ESV nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us & you.”’ 29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against the L ORD & turn away this day from following the L ORD by building an altar... other than the altar of the L ORD our God that stands before his tabernacle!”

Joshua 22:30-31 ESV 30 When Phinehas the priest & the chiefs of the congregation... heard the words that the people of Reuben & the people of Gad & the people of Manasseh spoke, it was good in their eyes. 31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said...

Joshua 22:31-32 ESV “Today we know that the L ORD is in our midst, because you have not committed this breach of faith against the L ORD. Now you have delivered the people of Israel from the hand of the L ORD.” 32 Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, & the chiefs, returned…

Joshua 22:32-33 ESV to the people of Israel, & brought back word to them. 33 And the report was good in the eyes of the people of Israel. And the people of Israel blessed God & spoke no more of making war against them...

Joshua 22:34 ESV 34 The people of Reuben & the people of Gad called the altar Witness, “For,” they said, “it is a witness between us that the L ORD is God.”
