Presentation transcript:

A region is an area that shares similar characteristics.

Formal Region --regions that are created through one or more unifying characteristics (that are measurable) --EXAMPLES: Countries, states, and cities (the City of Nashville); Basque region of Spain; Amazon River Basin

Functional Region –region with a defined core that retains a characteristic that diminishes as it spreads outward; involves some form of spatial interaction --EXAMPLE: The Nashville Metro region (includes Bellevue, Madison, Antioch, etc.) Perceptual (or Vernacular) Region --regions that are created through peoples experiences and beliefs/ideas about places and areas -EXAMPLE: “The Midwest”

Let’s Test Ourselves Over Regions: You decide if it is Formal, Functional, or Perceptual State of Tennessee Tennessee River Valley Dixie Mid-State Region Davidson County Brazil Cajun Country BosWash Megalopolis Appalachia

BosWash

Have your group brainstorm another example of each type of region. Be prepared to share.
