2 REGIONS How are Regions similar to and different from other places? Formal Regions Regions defined by governmental or administrative boundaries (States, Countries, Cities) Regions defined by similar characteristics (Corn Belt, Rocky Mountain region, Chinatown). Functional Regions Regions defined by a function (newspaper service area, cell phone coverage area). Vernacular or Perceptual Regions Regions defined by peoples perception (middle east, the south, etc.)

3 Formal Regions Regions that have a common cultural or physical feature Regions are defined by political boundaries Cultural Feature: Chinatown; Latin America Physical Feature: Rocky Mountain States, Corn Belt. Political Boundaries: Cities, States, School Districts, Countries, Continents

7 Functional Regions Regions connected by a central function: TV Station, Pizza delivery, Transportation Routes… Central hub is important! Can you think of others?

8 Vernacular/perceptual Regions Regions whose borders/boundaries are determined by people’s beliefs. Not a scientifically measured process.
